Opportunity Snapshot

In this unique position you will join a highly collaborative sales team, giving you the opportunity to get out of the competitive sales scene while still enjoying the satisfaction of developing consultative solutions -- as well as earning solid sales income. The recently launched Employer Solutions division of HMS has been growing at 75% per year over the past two years and, not only will you be able to take advantage of that momentum, but as we continue to grow we'll need proven leaders to step up. Our preference is that you already have healthcare experience but, if not, this is your chance to bring your sales skills to a relatively recession-proof industry.

Since 1985 HMS has focused exclusively on the healthcare industry; we have partnered with more than 45 Medicaid agencies, other state health programs, and more than 50 government-sponsored healthcare plans to help them recover billions of dollars, and save billions more through cost avoidance. We are now taking this record of success into the private sector, led by the Employer Solutions division. For this and other reasons HMS was ranked 10th on Fortune's 2010 "100 Fastest-Growing Companies" list.

The Requirements

To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have:
  • A bachelor's degree.
  • Significant business-to-business sales experience, preferably in healthcare and ideally with cost containment.
  • Experience with value selling, not relying on price alone to win business.
  • Strong prospecting skills, with a "Hunter" mentality, including cold calling.
  • Extensive experience in delivering face-to-face presentations to clients.
  • A demonstrated track record at selling services in a highly consultative model.
  • A proven ability to develop relationships both in person and over the phone.
  • Solid negotiation skills.
  • Professional maturity and a demeanor that conveys confidence and trust.
  • A high-energy approach and strong work ethic.
  • Openness to learning new and different sales methods and practices.
  • The ability to:
    • Communicate both verbally and in writing, fluently in English.
    • Be careful and thorough about detail.
    • Analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems.
    • Exercise independent judgment.
    • Working proficiently with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access.
You will need to be willing and able to travel nationally, and sometimes on short notice. However, we take advantage of teleconferences and webinars, so your overnight travel will average about one day a week. Our preference is that you live in Los Angeles or San Francisco, however, you might be based anywhere as long as you are convenient to a major airport.

The Role

Reporting to the Vice President, you will join a dynamic sales team that is driven to succeed with an industry leading product suite to sell.  Commission is based on individual performance; our base + commission plan will have a solid performer with a total compensation targeted for six figure income.

You will need to acquire and maintain a solid understanding of HMS Employer Solutions' offerings (we'll train you, of course) and there will be plenty of individual contributor activities as well as teamwork. You'll engage in just about all aspects of sales, from developing sales plans to analyzing customer needs to providing customer support. As you would expect, there is a degree of administrative work, such as maintaining data in Salesforce.com.

Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Why HMS

Distinctive sales culture -- in Employer Solutions you'll find a group of people who were happy to leave the cutthroat world of competitive sales behind. We enjoy getting to know clients and helping them be more effective in their business, and we take pride in developing and delivering value-adding solutions and exceptional customer service.

Emerging market, expanding opportunities -- while the rest of HMS is targeting government and managed care sectors, Employer Solutions is blazing new trails in the private sector, and business is booming. We sell to all industries and we are able to take advantage of some "cross pollination" opportunities. Employer Solutions focuses on cost containment strategies such as dependent eligibility audit services, but you also will be able to create solutions leveraging the full HMS portfolio of products and services, including coordination of benefits, program integrity, pharmacy services and customer service operations.

Rapid growth in spite of a down economy -- the healthcare industry is as robust as ever; for example, Medicaid and Medicare budgets are growing and, with billions of dollars at stake, there is a strong emphasis among policy leaders (and the voting public) on cost containment and payment accuracy. HMS is taking advantage of this climate to drive solid growth. In addition to posting double-digit growth year over year since 2001, HMS is successfully expanding into new markets, including employer solutions, federal healthcare and managed care.

Career options -- this position can offer you challenges and opportunities (and excellent income) for years to come. At the same time, if you have the ambition and talent, your success in this role could set you up to pursue promotional opportunities within Employer Solutions or throughout HMS.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive base plus commission, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes all you would expect plus a few pleasant surprises, such as a 401(k) plan with generous employer match, flexible spending plans, and much more.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will embrace our non-traditional approach and our philosophy that, by working together and focusing on helping customers solve their issues, the rewards will follow. You also will need to demonstrate initiative both in getting to know your teammates' strengths and in leveraging that knowledge to muster the best resources for each project.
